Gazipur police members have arrested five individuals in connection with the brutal killing of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin, who was hacked to death in Gazipur.
They were arrested in a day-long drive conducted by law enforcers on Friday (August 8), across different parts of the city.
Md Shahin Khan, officer-in-charge of Gazipur Metropolitan’s Basan Police Station, confirmed the matter.
He said the five were picked up from separate locations in Gazipur. The identities of the detainees have not yet been confirmed.
Asaduzzaman Tuhin, 38, a journalist for the daily Protidiner Kagoj, was killed on Thursday night around 8pm in the Chandana Chowrasta area of Gazipur city. He was the son of Hasan Jamal from Bhatipara village in Fulbaria upazila of Mymensingh.
A video of the incident circulating online shows a young man assaulting a woman. At one point, six to seven other youths armed with machetes, cleavers and knives attempted to hack the man, who managed to flee the scene. The group then chased him from behind with weapons in hand.
Police suspect that Tuhin was filming the incident. When the attackers noticed, they reportedly chased him as well. Although he initially fled the scene, Tuhin was later caught and hacked to death in front of a shop.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Crime-North) Rabiul Hasan said Tuhin was likely killed for recording the assault. He confirmed that the suspects have been identified.
