Villagers in Moulvibazar, northeastern Bangladesh, have beaten a large python to death after it reportedly killed and swallowed five goats over several days.
The incident occurred on Thursday in Barlekha Upazila, specifically in Bobarthol village under South Shahbazpur Union. Locals had been alarmed by the mysterious disappearance of goats from several farms in recent days, initially suspecting theft.
However, on Thursday afternoon, the cause became clear when a giant python was seen attacking and attempting to swallow a goat in a field. Hearing the goat’s cries, nearby farmers rushed to the scene. Shocked by the sight, villagers quickly gathered, armed with sticks, machetes, and other tools, and killed the snake.
The python, which residents said was around 20 feet long, was unable to be stopped before swallowing the goat. Several images of the incident later circulated on Facebook, showing the dead python, the goat, and villagers surrounding them.
Dr Jahangir Alam, divisional officer at the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department in Moulvibazar, confirmed the incident on Friday.
“The matter has come to our attention. A team has been sent to the location. Initial assessments suggest the python entered the village due to a shortage of food in the nearby forest. We are collecting further information and will take legal action under the wildlife protection laws if required,” he said.
Local government representative Abdul Mannan, acting chairman of South Shahbazpur Union Parishad, said the villagers reacted out of fear and frustration.
“They killed the python while it was devouring the fifth goat. I heard it was about 20 feet long. The villagers acted to protect themselves and their livestock,” he said.
The killing has sparked concern among wildlife conservation groups, who have condemned the act and called for greater awareness and protective measures to preserve endangered species.
