Members of police recovered a dismembered, headless body packed into eight pieces from a travel bag in the Station Road area of Tongi, Gazipur, on Friday morning.
The bag was found abandoned beside a shop near the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.
Locals noticed the travel bag lying unattended for an extended period and became suspicious. They then informed the police.
Tongi East Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Faridul Islam confirmed the matter.
He said police arrived at the scene and opened the bag, which was wrapped in polythene. Inside, they found the severed body parts of an unidentified man, without a head.
The victim’s identity has not yet been confirmed. Investigation underway to determine motive of the murder, he said.
Police suspect the man was killed two to three days ago, and the body was later dumped at the site inside the bag by unknown assailants, he added.
