Gazipur journalist Md Asaduzzaman Tuhin, 38, was hacked to death on Thursday night, reportedly for filming an assault involving a youth being beaten and chased with local weapons.
The incident happened around 8pm in the Chandana Chowrasta area of Gazipur city. Tuhin, a journalist for the daily Protidiner Kagoj, was publicly attacked and killed in the area, according to police.
The victim was the son of Hasan Jamal from Bhatipara in Fulbaria upazila of Mymensingh and had been living in Chandana Chowrasta with his family.
According to a CCTV footage a young man assaulting a woman. At one point, six to seven other youths carrying machetes, cleavers and knives attempted to hack the man, who eventually fled the scene. The armed group then chased him from behind.
Police suspect that journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin was filming the incident at the time. When the attackers noticed, they reportedly chased him. Although Tuhin initially managed to flee, he was later hacked to death in front of a shop. Police recovered his body from the scene after being informed.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Crime-North) Rabiul Hasan said the journalist may be killed for recording the assault.
He said that the suspects have been identified, and several police teams are conducting drives in different areas to arrest them.
Further details will be available once the perpetrators are detained, he added.
