Three factories of Alif Group in the Zarun area of Gazipur City Corporation have been closed indefinitely, triggering protests from workers.
On Thursday morning (March 20), employees gathered at the factory gates and began demonstrating after discovering a closure notice.
The affected factories include Swadhin Garments, Swadhin Dyeing, and Swadhin Printing.
According to the closure notice, all activities at the three factories have been suspended indefinitely under Section 13(1) of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006.
The notice cited an unauthorized strike by workers from March 17 to 19, which reportedly caused significant financial losses and disrupted production.
Workers claim they had been protesting for months over various demands, including annual leave and Eid bonuses, but their concerns were not addressed by the factory management.
The sudden closure has intensified their frustration, leading to renewed demonstrations.
Md. Nazrul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Konabari Police Station, confirmed that the workers had been protesting for several days.
Following the factory closure announcement, protests resumed at the factory premises, prompting the deployment of police to maintain order, he added.
