UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh want to return to Myanmar and called on the international community to restore peace and uphold their rights.
António Guterres made the remark during his visit to the Rohingya camps on Friday (March 14).
He expressed solidarity with the refugees and the Bangladeshi people for their generosity in hosting them.
Guterres underscored two key concerns from his discussions with the refugees. First, they wish to return home, and global efforts are needed to ensure their safe and dignified repatriation by ending the discrimination and persecution they faced in Myanmar.
Second, conditions in the camps need improvement, but recent cuts in humanitarian aid from the United States and European countries have put food rations at risk. He pledged to work with world leaders to secure funds and prevent further suffering.
Guterres emphasized that the international community must not forget the Rohingya and stressed the urgent need for more support to help them live with dignity in Bangladesh.
On the second day of his Bangladesh visit, the UN chief visited the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar. He arrived in Dhaka on Thursday for a four-day trip.
