31 arrested over vandalism, looting at KFC, Bata outlets in Khulna

At least 31 people were arrested in connection with Monday’s attacks on KFC and Bata outlets in Khulna city, police said.

Khulna Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Mohammad Ahsan Habib confirmed the arrests on Tuesday morning (April 8).

According to him, efforts are underway to identify other suspects using video and CCTV footage. Legal proceedings have begun against those detained, he added.

According to locals and police, the violence erupted during a protest march against the Israeli military offensive in Gaza. A section of the demonstrators allegedly broke away and carried out attacks on several commercial establishments, including the KFC and Domino’s outlets on KDA Avenue, and the Bata showroom near the Tiger Garden Hotel in the city’s Shibbari area.

The KFC outlet sustained significant damage, with its glass panels smashed. Furniture, a television, a refrigerator, and an oven were reportedly removed and destroyed. Looting was also reported at the Bata showroom, with multiple pairs of shoes taken.

Similar incidents of vandalism were reported in other cities across the country. In response, Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam has ordered the swift arrest of those involved.
