Two people were killed and four others injured during a procession of Jashan-e-Julus, marking the celebration of Eid-e-Miladunnabi, in the city’s Muradpur area on Saturday noon.
The deceased were identified as Ayub Ali, 60, of Patiya upazila, and Saiful Islam, 13, of Kalamia Bazar area under Bakalia thana.
The injured were rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where doctors declared two dead. Four others are now receiving treatment, with one in critical condition at the ICU, said Sohel Rana, in-charge of the CMCH Police Outpost.
Aminur Rahman, a member of the Anjuman-e-Rahmania Trust medical team, said several people collapsed in the crowd due to excessive heat, and some were trampled in the process. “We managed to rescue six people, but unfortunately, two of them did not survive,” he said.
The Miladunnabi rally, which drew hundreds of participants, began at 9am from Alamgir Khankah Sharif and later moved through different areas of the city.
Authorities said investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fatalities.
