Bangladesh’s interim government has strongly condemned the violent assault on Gono Odhikar Parishad president and July uprising leader Nurul Haque Nur, calling it not only an attack on a prominent politician but also a blow to the spirit of the democratic movement.
In a statement issued by the press wing of the chief adviser’s office on Saturday (August 30), the government said the attack was “brutal” and underscored that such violence undermines the historic struggle for justice and accountability that has united the nation.
The statement assured citizens that a “full and impartial investigation” into the incident would be carried out with the highest priority. It pledged that no individual, regardless of position or influence, would escape accountability, and that justice would be delivered transparently and without delay.
A specialized medical board has already been formed to oversee Nur’s treatment, along with that of other injured members of his party. The government pledged to ensure the highest standard of care and said it was prepared to send them abroad at state expense if necessary.
The interim authority expressed solidarity with Nur, his colleagues, and their families during this crisis, describing the nation’s prayers as being with them.
The statement also recalled Nur’s role in leading the 2018 anti-quota reform movement against Sheikh Hasina’s rule, his unifying influence as a student leader, and his subsequent arrest and mistreatment during the July 2024 uprising. It described his courage and sacrifices as part of Bangladesh’s collective aspiration for a free and democratic nation.
In its message, the interim government urged all political and social forces who took part in the July uprising to remain united in defending the gains of that movement, countering conspiracies, and ensuring the country’s democratic transition.
The government reaffirmed that the next national election will be held on schedule in the first half of February 2026. It vowed to resist any attempts to delay or derail the polls, stressing that “the will of the people will prevail, and no malign force will be allowed to obstruct Bangladesh’s democratic journey.”
