The BNP has conveyed to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres its demand for a quick national election following the completion of election-related reforms.
The message was shared during a meeting today between Guterres and the National Consensus Commission, along with leaders from various political parties and stakeholders.
BNP Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, accompanied by Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed, spoke to reporters after the meeting. Fakhrul emphasized that the BNP wants the reforms to be completed before the election takes place.
Salahuddin Ahmed added that the UN believes it is up to the people of Bangladesh to decide the timing and process of the reforms and elections, as it is considered an internal matter.
UN Secretary-General Guterres, who arrived in Bangladesh on March 13, has been on a four-day visit at the invitation of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.
During his visit, Guterres met with various officials, including the chief adviser and the foreign affairs adviser, and discussed Bangladesh's ongoing reforms and the Rohingya crisis.
The UN chief also expressed gratitude for Bangladesh’s continued support to Rohingya refugees and its strong commitment to global peacekeeping.
