8 injured in Madaripur robbery, 2 robbers killed in mob attack

At least eight villagers were injured in a shooting by a group of robbers on the Madaripur-Shariatpur border on Friday night (February 28) while two of the robbers were later lynched by locals.

The incident occurred around 9:30 pm near the Khowajpur-Tekerhat port area, when a group of robbers arrived on a speedboat, intending to rob a sand-carrying vessel.

As locals intervened, the robbers opened fire, injuring eight people. The robbers also threw hand grenades and bricks to resist the villagers’ attempts to stop them.

In a swift response, villagers pursued the robbers in several trawlers, eventually cornering them in the Tentulaya area of Shariatpur, on the Kirtinasha River.

There, a mob attacked the robbers, and two were killed. Seven others were severely injured and were rushed to Shariatpur District Sadar Hospital, where two later died from their wounds.

The injured villagers, including Anik Sardar (14), Salauddin Sardar (35), and Helal Molla (44), were initially treated at local hospitals, with five of them later transferred to Dhaka Medical College in critical condition.

Eyewitness Raju Farazi, a resident of Chargobindapur, said, "When we learned about the robbery, we rushed to the river. The robbers opened fire on us as we approached, and several of us were injured. There were around 10 robbers, all armed."

Madaripur police station officer-in-charge (OC) Md. Mokchedur Rahman confirmed the matter.

He said that both police and military personnel responded to the scene. The robbers fled toward Shariatpur, and the injured are currently receiving treatment, he added.
