The Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) has formally launched voter registration and smart National Identity (NID) card services for Bangladeshi expatriates in Canada, marking a significant step toward including non-resident citizens in the country’s democratic process.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin inaugurated the services on Thursday (Sep 11) at a ceremony at the Bangladesh High Commission in Ottawa, where he also handed over smart NID cards to several registered expatriates, symbolizing the official launch, according to a message received in Dhaka today.
“Democracy is inclusive when all citizens can take part, wherever they live,” the CEC said, stressing the importance of making voting rights more accessible to Bangladeshis abroad. He noted that expatriates, who play a vital role through remittances, investment, and knowledge transfer, should also have a direct say in shaping Bangladesh’s future.
During the event, the CEC held a question-and-answer session with members of the expatriate community. Acting High Commissioner Kazi Russel Pervez delivered the welcome address, while Deputy High Commissioner Dewan Hossne Ayub gave the vote of thanks.
Under the new EC programme, Bangladeshi nationals living in Canada can now access voter registration and NID services at the High Commission in Ottawa and the Consulate General in Toronto.
Officials said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to protect the democratic rights of nearly 10 million citizens abroad, ensuring their voices are represented alongside their contributions to national development.
