The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on Monday (July 14) indicted eight former members of the police force, including ex-Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Habibur Rahman, in connection with the killing of six people during the July uprising in Chankharpool last year.
The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, set 10 August for the prosecution’s opening statement and 11 August to begin recording witness testimonies.
The other two members of the tribunal are Justice Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
Of the accused, four were produced before the court: Arshad Hossain, former inspector (operations) of Shahbagh Police Station; and constables Sujon, Imaz Hossain, and Nasirul Islam.
Asked whether they would plead guilty, all four rejected the charges, calling the allegations false and demanded justice.
The remaining accused — Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former DMP joint commissioner; Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam, former additional deputy commissioner; and Mohammad Imrul, former assistant commissioner of DMP’s Ramna Zone — are currently on the run.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam and Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim appeared for the prosecution in court. Lawyer Sifat Mahmud Shuvo appeared for the accused.
