27 former BDR members released from Kashimpur jail

Twenty-seven former members of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) were released from Kashimpur Central Jail today around 10 am after securing bail in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act in connection with the 2009 BDR mutiny.

Relatives of the released personnel were present at the jail gate to receive them.

Jail authorities confirmed the release, saying the bail bonds of the 27 individuals were submitted on Wednesday and their documents were verified before their release.

Mohammad Al Mamun, Superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail said that the release followed an order issued on Monday by Judge Ibrahim Miah of the Special Court at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.

The court granted bail to 40 former BDR members in total, all accused in the mutiny-related explosives case.

The BDR mutiny, which took place on February 25, 2009, at the Peelkhana headquarters in Dhaka, resulted in the tragic death of 74 people, including 57 army officers.
Following the incident, two separate cases—one for murder and the other under the Explosive Substances Act—were filed.
