Bangladeshi worker killed in fall at Malaysian construction site

A Bangladeshi migrant worker has died after falling from the third floor of a building under construction in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The incident occurred at around 4:00 pm Bangladesh time on Wednesday (May 14).

The deceased, Tahir Mia, 35, was a construction worker from Kalisiri village in Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj district, northeastern Bangladesh. He had been working in Malaysia for about five years, according to family and local sources.

Tahir reportedly lost his footing while working on the third floor of a multi-storey building, said eyewitnesses.

“He slipped and fell to his death while on duty,” Matiur Rahman, an official from the Chunarughat Karmasangan Bank, told banglanews24.com.

His colleagues confirmed that he died on the spot and are now working with local authorities to repatriate his body to Bangladesh.

Tahir had not returned home in years due to visa complications, family members said.

In a family-arranged decision, he married his cousin via video call four months ago and had been preparing to return home soon.

Mohammad Zahir Mia, a local resident and acquaintance of the family, said relatives were informed of the tragedy over the phone by Tahir’s coworkers in Malaysia. The family has since appealed for assistance to bring the body home.

In response, Chunarughat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Robin Mia told banglanews24.com, “We are ready to provide all necessary support if the family of the deceased seeks government assistance. Steps will be taken once detailed information is available.”
