JnU students block Dhaka road on 2nd day of protest

Students of Jagannath University (JnU) in Dhaka continued their protest for a second consecutive day on Thursday (May 15), blocking a road in the capital as part of a demonstration to press home a three-point demand.

The protest, led by the student alliance "July Unity" — a coalition of political, social, and cultural organisations within the university — has seen hundreds of students gathering at the Kakrail Mosque intersection, adjacent to the residence of the Chief Adviser of the interim government.

On Thursday morning, more students arrived by university buses to join those who had spent the night at the site.

Protesters barricaded the road stretching from Matsya Bhaban to Kakrail, effectively halting vehicular movement on this busy route.

Chanting slogans and waving placards, students were seen sitting on the road in front of the Kakrail Mosque.

Security has been tightened in the area, particularly around Jamuna, the official residence of the Chief Adviser, with law enforcement deployed to prevent further escalation.

The protest follows a clash between students and police on Wednesday during a long march toward Jamuna.

The march, involving both students and faculty, began after talks with the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday failed to yield a satisfactory response.

Police reportedly used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd at the Kakrail intersection, injuring several protesters who were later treated at local hospitals.

The students are demanding the immediate fulfillment of their three-point charter (details pending official confirmation), reforms in university governance and funding, and action against alleged administrative negligence.

Despite repeated appeals, no official statement has yet been issued by the UGC or the Ministry of Education.

With the protest growing in size and intensity, the situation in Kakrail remains tense. Student leaders have said the demonstration will continue until their demands are addressed.
