At least 11 people were killed in lightning strikes across five districts of Bangladesh on Monday (April 28), authorities said.
The fatalities were reported from Cumilla, Kishoreganj, Netrokona, Chandpur, and Habiganj districts, with incidents occurring between morning and afternoon.
Cumilla:
Four people died in separate lightning incidents in Barura and Muradnagar upazilas, officials said.
Two schoolchildren — Fahad Hossain and Saymon Hossain, both 13-year-old sixth-grade students at Boraharipur High School — were struck while flying kites in Payalgachha village of Barura.
In Muradnagar, two farmers — Nikhil Chandra Debnath of Korbanpur village and Jewel Bhuiyan of Deora village — died while harvesting paddy. Three others were injured, reportedly suffering hearing loss. Authorities confirmed the deaths and handed over the bodies to the families.
Kishoreganj:
Three people died in separate lightning strikes in Mithamoin and Ashtagram upazilas.
The victims were identified as Phulesa Begum, 65, of Raniganj village; Indrajit Das, 35, of Halalpur village; and Swadhin Mia, 15, of Khairpur village. Local police and union officials confirmed the deaths.
Netrokona:
In Netrokona, a madrasa teacher and a student were killed in two separate incidents.
Didarul Islam, a teacher from Kalmakanda upazila, died when lightning struck Gobindapur village late Sunday night. On Monday morning, nine-year-old madrasa student Arafat Mia was killed in Tiyashree village of Madan upazila.
Chandpur:
In Kachua upazila, a woman identified as Bishakha Sarkar, 35, died after being struck by lightning while collecting straw near her home in Nahara village.
Local medical officials said there were no external injuries, suggesting she may have died from shock.
Habiganj:
In Baniachong upazila, worker Durbasa Das, 35, was killed and three others, including two of his brothers, were injured in a lightning strike while working in a haor field.
The injured were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment. Separately, a child named Bayjid was injured in another lightning strike in the same upazila while tending to ducks and was treated locally.
