Members of National Security Intelligence (NSI) and Customs authorities have arrested a man with a gold consignment at Sylhet MAG Osmani International Airport on Friday morning (April 25).
The arrestee was identified as Alim Uddin, son of Shahab Uddin from Gohora village in Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet.
The gold was recovered around 10:30am after Alim arrived from Dubai on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-248.
He was caught while trying to pass through the green channel without declaring the items. NSI officials challenged him and confirmed the presence of gold after scanning his belongings.
An NSI officer, requesting anonymity, said the gold was hidden in a melted form and attached to the passenger’s shirt and trousers. He was carrying it in a concealed way from Dubai.
Customs Assistant Commissioner Injamam Ul Haque said, acting on a tip-off, officials scanned the passenger and found liquid gold in paste form hidden inside his trousers and underwear. The seized gold is estimated to weigh around 1.5 kilograms.
Legal action will be taken as per customs laws, the official added.
