A four-month-old child died and his parents were critically injured in a gas cylinder explosion at a rented apartment in Gazipur’s Pubail area early Sunday.
The incident happened around 4:30am on August 3 on the ground floor of a three-storey building owned by Sajjad Munshi in the Mirer Bazar area under Pubail Police Station, Gazipur Metropolitan Police.
The deceased was identified as Raihan, aged four months. His parents—Ripon Mia, 23, and Khadija Akhter, 20—suffered severe burns. Their full details were not immediately available.
According to police and locals, the family had moved into the flat just a day earlier, on Saturday. On Sunday morning, Khadija reportedly went to heat water using a gas stove when the cylinder suddenly exploded, triggering a fire inside the apartment and a loud blast. All three members of the family were burned in the incident.
Later, neighbours rushed to the scene and rushed victims to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, where doctors declared Raihan dead on arrival. Ripon sustained burns on 80 percent of his body, while Khadija suffered burns covering 70 percent.
Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Rahim Sardar of Pubail Police Station confirmed the matter.
The parents remain in critical condition. “We are investigating the cause of the explosion,” he said.
