Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun appeared before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today as a state witness in the war crimes case against Awami League President and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He was brought to the tribunal from Keraniganj Central Jail at around 9:25am, notably without handcuffs. The tribunal is trying Sheikh Hasina in absentia for alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July–August 2024 crackdown on student-led protests.
Today’s proceedings included the prosecution’s opening statement and the first round of witness testimonies.
The trial is proceeding in Hasina’s absence, in line with international legal provisions that allow in absentia trials when the accused fails to appear.
The restructured tribunal has so far received over 500 formal complaints related to the 2024 incidents, with four cases — including Hasina’s — officially underway.
Investigations into six additional cases, involving 17 senior Awami League leaders including Obaidul Quader, are nearing completion.
According to prosecution sources, an arrest warrant was issued and sent to Sheikh Hasina’s last known address. Her continued absence has led the tribunal to proceed unilaterally, in accordance with international judicial norms.
Key witnesses in the case include Amar Desh editor Mahmudur Rahman, researcher Badruddin Umar, retired Lt. Colonel Hasinur Rahman, and activists Nahid Islam and Umama Fatema. Family members of those injured or killed in the 2024 “July Movement” are also expected to testify.
