Govt to set-up land-based LNG terminal

The government has decided to establish a land-based LNG terminal to ensure uninterrupted gas supply for industrial use in the country.

Speaking to journalists in Doha on Thursday (April 25), Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said, “Many entrepreneurs have complained that they are unable to set up new factories due to inadequate gas supply. To resolve this issue, we are working on building a land-based LNG terminal urgently so that imported gas can be supplied properly.”

He said that a proposal regarding this project was presented to Qatar Energy during the visit of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus to Doha.

Alam said that the terminal would soon be built to expand gas distribution across industrial zones in Bangladesh.

Commenting on the Doha visit, he described it as highly productive and successful. “This has been one of the most engaging and fruitful trips,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the visit would help enhance Bangladesh's global image and attract international investors to the country.

Referring to the recovery of the national economy, Alam said the interim administration had reduced the previous government’s outstanding debt from $3.2 billion to $600 million.

He mentioned that the remaining debt would be cleared within a few months, saying, “This demonstrates to the international community that Bangladesh is open and ready for investment.”

Professor Muhammad Yunus is set to leave Doha today for Rome, Italy, where he will attend the funeral of Pope Francis, marking the end of his four-day official tour.
