A schoolgirl died after being hit by a train in Narsingdi on Sunday (April 20) afternoon.
The accident occurred on the railway tracks in front of a mosque in the Bilashdi area of Narsingdi town.
The deceased was identified as Sumaiya Akter, 16.
Sumaiya was the daughter of Khokon Ahmed Baten, a Saudi expatriate, and a tenth-grade humanities student at Brahmondi Government Girls’ High School in Narsingdi.
According to railway police and locals, Sumaiya left home in the morning for private tuition. While returning home in the afternoon, she was crossing the railway tracks near the Bilashdi mosque. At that time, the Dhaka-bound Kalni Express was passing on one track, and she noticed it while crossing.
However, she failed to notice the Narsingdi-bound Titas Commuter train coming from Dhaka on the other track. She was hit by the Titas train and died on the spot.
Railway police later recovered the body and brought it to the Narsingdi Railway Outpost.
SI MBM Zahurul Islam, in-charge of Narsingdi Railway Outpost, said the girl died due to careless crossing. He added that the family has requested to take the body without an autopsy. Legal steps will be taken after discussing with higher authorities.
