Dr Yunus urges youth to build '3-zero clubs' for global change

Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Monday (Sept 22) called on young people around the world to take the lead in building “3-Zero Clubs” as a pathway to transform the planet into a more just, inclusive, and sustainable place.

Speaking at a high-level United Nations side event titled Social Business, Youth and Technology, held at the UN Headquarters in New York, Prof Yunus outlined a bold vision for what he termed a “3-Zero World” — one with Zero Net Carbon Emissions, Zero Wealth Concentration to End Poverty, and Zero Unemployment through the power of human creativity.

“This is not a dream. It is already becoming reality,” said the Nobel Laureate, urging youth to step up as change agents. “That’s why we’re encouraging young people everywhere to form 3-Zero Clubs — spaces where individuals become 3-Zero people.”

The Chief Adviser elaborated that a 3-Zero person is someone committed to sustainable living, minimizing waste, and embracing social entrepreneurship — contributing nothing to global warming, wealth inequality, or joblessness.

Highlighting the importance of environmental responsibility, Prof Yunus also emphasized the need for Zero Waste, aligning his call with the UN Secretary-General’s own “Zero Waste Initiative.”

“These clubs can grow into 3-Zero families, 3-Zero villages, 3-Zero cities — and one day, a 3-Zero world,” he said. “It starts with a single step. But together, those steps can change the world.”

Prof Yunus called the UN forum more than just a stage for speeches, saying it must be a source of genuine inspiration. “In these turbulent times, true transformation lies in our unity,” he said. “If we join hands — harnessing the power of social business, the energy of youth, and the potential of technology — we can untangle even the most complex global crises.”

He concluded with a powerful message to the global community: “Let us become the architects of a new wave — a world built on justice, sustainability and hope. A world where our collective dreams ignite a new dawn for all of humanity.”
