Extortion mimicking Khaleda Zia, CID freezes Tk5 Crore

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has frozen 13 bank accounts linked to Motalles Hossain and his associated individuals and organisations in a case involving impersonation and financial fraud.

CID officials said Motalles allegedly impersonated former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia by mimicking her voice and falsely identifying himself as her liaison officer to fraudulently collect money.

CID’s Special Superintendent of Police Jasim Uddin Khan confirmed the matter on Thursday (July 31).

He said the action was taken following a court order.

A total of Tk5.03 crore has been temporarily frozen in these accounts, he said.

CID’s ongoing investigation has uncovered suspicious financial transactions worth approximately Tk26.84 crore in the accounts of Motalles Hossain and entities connected to him. Authorities suspect links to money laundering and illegally acquired assets.

The CID is also reviewing Motalles’s immovable properties and broader financial activities as part of its inquiry.

In addition, the agency is gathering information from individuals who were allegedly defrauded and working to identify other members of the suspected fraud ring.
