The body of a woman who went missing after falling into an open manhole in Tongi has been recovered 36 hours later, according to the Fire Service.
The victim, Faria Tasnim, 32, was found on Tuesday morning around 8:30 am beneath a layer of water hyacinth in Bastuhara Beel, a wetland area in Tongi's Hossain Market vicinity of Gazipur.
Tasnim, originally from Chuadanga, was the daughter of Munshi Oliullah Ahmed. She lived in Dhaka’s Mirpur area and worked in the marketing department of a private company.
Citing locals and the Fire Service, officials said that Tasnim had visited Hossain Market in Tongi on Sunday night (July 27) for professional work. While returning around 8:15 pm, she accidentally fell into an open manhole.
Locals tried to rescue her but failed. A diving team from the Tongi Fire Service then launched an immediate search operation, though no trace of her was found inside the manhole or surrounding drainage system.
Her body was eventually discovered floating in the Bastuhara Beel on Tuesday morning, covered under water hyacinth.
Officials believe she drowned after falling into the manhole and that her body was carried by the flow of drain water to the wetland.
Abdul Mannan, deputy assistant director of Tongi Fire Service, said multiple Fire Service teams, including divers, had searched extensively across sections of the drainage network. The body was finally recovered 36 hours after the incident.
