Road communication between Sajek and Khagrachhari has been suspended after landslides struck the Nandaram, Chailyatali, and Champaknagar areas along the Baghaihat-Sajek road in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati.
As a result, more than 400 tourists are currently stranded in Sajek.
The landslides occurred at three points on the Baghaihat-Sajek road on Thursday night (July 24) due to heavy rainfall. No casualties have been reported.
However, around 425 tourists are reportedly stranded in the Sajek area, while many vehicles remain stuck on both sides of the blocked road.
Fire service personnel from Dighinala have arrived and begun clearing the debris.
Confirming the landslides, Sajek Union Parishad Chairman Atulal Chakma said, “Soil from the hills has collapsed at three points along the road. Large boulders and uprooted trees have also blocked the way. We have engaged local residents to help clear the debris, but without heavy machinery and bulldozers, it is not possible to remove the rocks and trees.”
The matter has been reported to the 6 Bengal Baghaihat Zone of the army and to Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shirine Akter.
Upon contacting the Khagrachhari Roads and Highways Department, officials said that the road does not fall under their jurisdiction. They clarified that the road is maintained by the ECB, and advised contacting the army for assistance.
