The Border Security Force (BSF) of India has opened fire on a Bangladeshi youth, killing him near the border area of Parshuram in Feni.
The deceased was identified as Md Liton, 32, son of Gachi Mia from the Baspadua area of Parshuram municipality. His body is currently being held at a hospital in Bilonia, India.
The incident happened around midnight on Thursday (July 24) at the Baspadua border area under the jurisdiction of the 4 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion. The battalion’s commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Mosharaf Hossain, confirmed the development.
This follows the earlier death of another Bangladeshi, Md Millat Hossain, 21, son of Yusuf Mia from the same area. A third individual, Md Afshar, 30, son of the late Air Ahmad and their neighbour, was also injured and is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
According to local sources, Liton, Millat, and Afshar crossed pillar 2164/3-S near the Guthuma BOP area and entered Indian territory close to the barbed wire fence. BSF personnel reportedly opened fire on them at that time.
Liton, who sustained gunshot wounds, was taken into Indian custody. Millat and Afshar were rescued by locals and initially taken to Parshuram Upazila Health Complex before being transferred to Feni General Hospital. Millat died during treatment there. Afshar was later moved to Chattogram due to the severity of his injuries.
Speaking to reporters, Lt Col Mosharaf Hossain said the area has seen frequent smuggling activities involving people from both sides of the border.
He said BGB members are closely monitoring the situation and remain in communication with their Indian counterparts.
“Gunfire at the border is never acceptable,” the BGB officer said, adding that a formal protest will be lodged over the incident.
