Supporters of the banned Chhatra League, along with activists from the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, reportedly attacked the convoy of the Gopalganj Sadar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) on Wednesday (July 16), escalating tensions in the district.

The incident occurred in the Gandhiyashur area of Gopalganj Sadar, shortly after a police vehicle was vandalised and set on fire in a separate attack in Durgapur Union earlier in the day.

Several people were injured in the attack on the UNO’s convoy, according to local reports.

Confirming the incident, Gopalganj Sadar UNO M Rakibul Hasan told the media that supporters of the Awami League and the banned Chhatra League were involved in the assault and vandalism.

The violence erupted ahead of a scheduled march by the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Gopalganj municipal park as part of its month-long "July March" campaign.

The party's convener Nahid Islam and several central leaders were expected to attend the rally.

On Tuesday, Nahid Islam posted on his verified Facebook profile: “July 16... March to Gopalganj,” signalling the party’s plans to rally in the city.

Sarjis Alam, the NCP’s chief coordinator for the northern region, echoed the call in a separate post, writing: “We are coming! July march, Gopalganj district town, at 11 am.”

In another post, he urged supporters to join the protest, saying: “Fellow fighters of the revolution, come rushing like a comet.”

Authorities have increased security in the area amid fears of further unrest.

Earlier in the morning, a police patrol vehicle was torched in Durgapur Union, with officials blaming members of the banned Chhatra League and its allies for the attack.
