Police have arrested two more suspects in connection with the brutal killing of scrap metal trader Lal Chand, also known as Md Sohag, in front of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital—commonly known as Mitford Hospital—in the capital's Old Dhaka.
The detainees, identified as Rajib and Sajib, were picked up from Dhaka and nearby areas early Sunday morning, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to seven, police said.
“The two were named as accused in the case filed over the murder,” said Mohammad Jasim Uddin, Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Lalbagh Division.
On the evening of July 9, Sohag, 39, was attacked by a group of men in front of Gate No. 3 of Mitford Hospital.
He was hacked with sharp weapons before being pelted with stones in a gruesome assault that was captured on CCTV.
The attackers were also seen jumping on the victim’s body after he collapsed on the pavement.
Investigators say the murder was the result of a long-standing dispute but have not disclosed further details.
Following the incident, police launched a series of raids across Dhaka.
On July 11, detectives arrested two suspects—Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, 41, and Tarique Rahman Robin, 22—and recovered a foreign-made pistol from Robin.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) later arrested two more individuals: Alamgir, 28, and Monir, also known as Chhoto Monir, 25.
Another suspect, Md Titon Gazi, 32, was detained by Kotwali police on Saturday night.
Police say they are continuing the investigation and further arrests are likely.
