Bangladesh for win-win tariff deal with US as talks continue

Bangladesh is pursuing a tariff agreement with the United States that it hopes will serve the mutual interests of both nations, amid ongoing trade talks in Washington.

In a statement posted on his verified Facebook account, Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser said Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin is currently in the US capital leading Bangladesh’s negotiation team, accompanied by National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman.

The discussions follow a letter received by the Bangladesh government from US President Donald Trump on Monday, confirming that a 35 percent tariff will be imposed on Bangladeshi goods starting August 1.

According to officials, several rounds of discussions have already taken place between the two sides. Another key meeting is scheduled for July 9, with Sheikh Bashiruddin again leading the Bangladesh delegation, Shafiqul Alam added.

“Dhaka is looking forward to a tariff deal with Washington, which, we hope, will be win-win for both countries,” he said.

The proposed tariff hike has raised concerns in Dhaka, which relies heavily on exports to maintain economic stability. Officials remain optimistic that diplomacy and dialogue will lead to a resolution that supports continued bilateral trade.
