The government has issued a gazette banning all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations.
Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced the decision on May 12 after a law and order meeting.
According to government authorities the ban will remain in place until ongoing legal cases against party leaders—related to allegations of violence, disappearances, and other crimes—are resolved.
The order prohibits rallies, media coverage, publications, and social media activities linked to the party.
The government cited security concerns and referenced reports detailing rights violations between July and August 2024.
Legal proceedings against Awami League members are ongoing in the International Crimes Tribunal and other courts.
