A total of 593 road accidents occurred across Bangladesh in April, resulting in 588 deaths and 1,124 injuries, according to a report by Road Safety Foundation.
Among the victims, 229 motorcyclists lost their lives in 218 accidents, making up 38.94% of total fatalities.
Additionally, 116 pedestrians (19.72% of total deaths) and 74 drivers and assistants were also killed in various accidents.
The report, based on data from national newspapers, online portals, and electronic media, also highlighted seven maritime accidents, leading to eight deaths and four injuries, along with 22 railway accidents, causing 24 deaths and six injuries.
Region-wise, Dhaka Division recorded the highest number of accidents (173 incidents, 154 deaths), while Rangpur Division saw the lowest (31 incidents, 32 deaths). Chattogram District reported 35 accidents, with 46 fatalities, while Nilphamari had no casualties despite a few accidents.
In Dhaka city, 34 road accidents killed 19 people and injured 27 others.
The foundation identified key causes of accidents, including faulty vehicles, reckless driving, inadequate driver training, weak traffic enforcement, and lack of public awareness of road laws.
To improve road safety, the report recommended enhancing driver training, regulating work hours, strengthening traffic enforcement, banning slow-moving vehicles on highways, constructing road dividers, and reforming transport regulations.
Road Safety Foundation’s Executive Director Saidur Rahman urged immediate technological monitoring and public awareness campaigns to reduce reckless driving and pedestrian fatalities.
