ICT jails 3 ex-cops over Ashulia genocide

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today ordered the imprisonment of three former police officials in a genocide and crimes against humanity case involving the killing of six youths during the July-August 2024 mass uprising.

The tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, passed the order after the accused were produced in court.

The accused are former Additional SP (Crimes & Ops) Md Abdullahil Kafi, former Additional SP (Savar Circle) Md Shahidul Islam, and former DB Inspector Md Arafat Hossain.

According to the prosecution, on August 5, 2024, police in Ashulia shot six youths, placed their bodies in a police van, and set it on fire to destroy evidence—falsely attributing it to protester violence.

Tragically, one victim was reportedly still alive when the van was torched.

Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam called the incident “a heinous act of state brutality.”
