Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus reaffirmed his government's commitment to holding national elections as soon as possible, emphasizing that it remains their top priority.
Speaking at the 6th BIMSTEC Summit today in Bangkok, Yunus said, “Once our mandate for conducting elections and necessary reforms is fulfilled, we shall ensure a free, fair, and participatory election.”
He said the historical significance of Bangladesh’s July uprising and the sacrifices made by thousands, particularly the youth, in overthrowing an authoritarian regime.
He said that the country is undergoing a transformative phase, with efforts focused on economic stability, governance reforms, and anti-corruption measures.
Yunus also said that the formation of a seven-member "Jatiya Oaikyamot (Consensus) Commission" to oversee the implementation of reform recommendations. Additional commissions have been set up to address media, health, labor, and women’s rights policies.
“We will continue working steadfastly to protect the constitutional rights of all citizens,” he added.
The summit was attended by Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, BIMSTEC Secretary General Indra Mani Pandey, and other regional leaders.
