The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has refuted claims circulating on social media about 33 of its personnel going missing in the Naf River.
In an official statement today, BGB confirmed that these reports are completely false and misleading.
“Various social media platforms are spreading baseless rumors that 33 BGB members disappeared in the Naf River during a mission over the past two days,” the statement read.
Clarifying the actual incident, BGB stated that in the early hours of March 22, 2025, a boat carrying Rohingya refugees capsized due to strong currents while attempting to enter Bangladesh illegally near Paschimpara Ghat in Shahparirdwip, Teknaf.
Upon receiving the alert, BGB personnel stationed near the shore, along with local fishermen, immediately launched a rescue operation. They successfully saved 24 Rohingyas along with the sunken boat.
During the operation, the statement noted, one BGB member may have accidentally fallen into the rough sea due to the darkness and strong waves.
Describing the incident as deeply tragic, BGB assured that search efforts for both the missing BGB member and any remaining Rohingya refugees are ongoing with full commitment.
