UK keen to increase trade, investment with Bangladesh

The United Kingdom (UK) on Monday (August 14) has shown interest in increasing bilateral trade and investment with Bangladesh.

UK expressed interest during High Commissioner Sarah Cooke paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official Ganabhaban residence in the capital.

PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim confirmed the matter in a press briefing regarding the meeting.

He quoted Cooke as saying "The UK will continue its cooperation in Bangladesh's efforts for its overall development particularly in women education."

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina put stress on Rohingya repatriation at the meeting, saying, it would be better for Bangladesh as early as the Rohingya repatriation will take place, he said.

The UK envoy said the Rohingya repatriation will be expedited if the issue remains on the international spotlight.

The meeting expressed satisfaction over the existing bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the UK and hoped to consolidate the relationship further.

The UK envoy said they want a free, fair and peaceful election to be held in Bangladesh.

PM's Ambassador-at-Large Mohammad Ziauddin and Principal Secretary Md Tofazzel Hossain Miah, among others, were present.
