Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been found guilty of criminal conspiracy in a landmark case over the alleged illegal financing of his 2007 presidential campaign with funds from the regime of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The Paris criminal court delivered its verdict on Thursday, convicting the 70-year-old ex-president of conspiracy but acquitting him of embezzlement and corruption charges.

The ruling marks a dramatic turn in one of France’s most high-profile political scandals, which has dogged Sarkozy for more than a decade.
