More than 50 people have been killed in intensified Israeli bombardment of Gaza, with the United Nations accusing Israel of “inflicting terror on the Palestinian population of Gaza City” and forcing tens of thousands to flee.
The strikes, among the deadliest in recent weeks, have focused on Gaza City, where Israel’s ongoing offensive aims to capture the main urban centre of the besieged enclave.
The Global Sumud Flotilla reported explosions and communications blackouts as Israeli drones hovered overhead. Israel has vowed to “take the necessary measures” to prevent the flotilla from breaking its sea blockade.
The death toll from Israel’s war on Gaza has climbed to at least 65,382, with 166,985 wounded since the conflict erupted in October 2023.
Thousands more are thought to be buried beneath the ruins of bombed neighbourhoods. In Israel, 1,139 people were killed during the October 7 attacks, and roughly 200 were taken captive.
