China evacuates millions as Super Typhoon nears

Authorities in China have evacuated close to two million residents from the southern province of Guangdong as Super Typhoon Ragasa, the most powerful storm of the year globally, barrels toward the country’s southeastern coastline.

The city of Zhuhai is bracing for an onslaught, with a month’s worth of rainfall expected in a single day, according to BBC correspondent Laura Bicker. Officials have urged residents to remain indoors as the typhoon—dubbed the “King of Storms”—intensifies.

Ragasa, currently packing winds equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane, has already left a deadly trail in its wake. At least 14 people were killed in eastern Taiwan after a mountain lake burst, unleashing devastating floods that geologists have likened to a “tsunami from the mountains.”

The typhoon has spent days churning across the South China Sea, lashing the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and now threatening southern China with torrential rains, fierce winds, and potential landslides.

Emergency crews are on high alert across Guangdong as the storm’s outer bands begin to make landfall. China's meteorological agency has issued its highest-level warnings, urging swift preparations and caution in the face of potentially catastrophic impacts.
