The health condition of Nurul Haque Nur, president of Gana Adhikar Parishad and former vice president of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), has shown further improvement following treatment under a 10-member specialist medical board at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), according to the hospital director, Brigadier General Md Asaduzzaman.
Speaking shortly after 1am on Sunday (Sept 7), Brig Gen Asaduzzaman said Nur has been receiving care since he was admitted to the hospital with injuries sustained during a baton charge by law enforcement personnel in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area.
The hospital director explained that a preliminary medical board was formed immediately upon Nur’s arrival at the hospital. He and other senior physicians were present throughout the night to ensure continuous treatment.
That same night, Nur was transferred from the emergency department to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) located on the fourth floor of the hospital’s old building for close observation.
Subsequently, a stronger, more specialised 10-member medical board was established to oversee his care. The board is currently supervising his ongoing treatment, and Nur has since been moved to a VIP cabin in the old hospital building.
His condition has steadily improved since his admission, hospital officials said. A more detailed update on his medical status is expected to be provided to the media on Monday (Sept 8) afternoon.
The incident that led to Nur’s hospitalization occurred on the night of August 29, when activists of the Jatiya Party (JAPA) and Gana Adhikar Parishad clashed in the Bijoynagar area. Law enforcement agencies intervened to disperse the groups, using force, including baton charges. At least 50 people were injured in the confrontation, including Nur and the party’s General Secretary Rashed Khan.
Nur, who sustained serious injuries, was initially taken to Islami Bank Hospital. He was later transferred to DMCH’s emergency department around 11pm on the advice of attending doctors.
