BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today (September 7) expressed deep sorrow over the death of eminent writer, researcher, and leftist intellectual Badruddin Umar.
Umar, 94, passed away this morning while being taken to Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Shyamoli after falling ill.
In a Facebook post, Tarique Rahman said Umar was a fearless and independent-minded intellectual whose passing marks a profound loss for the nation.
He recalled Umar’s lifelong commitment to progressive politics, noting his activism from the 1952 Language Movement through the Liberation War, and his bold resistance against authoritarianism.
Tarique also praised Umar’s research-based writings on Bangladesh’s political, social, cultural, and economic transformations, calling them invaluable contributions. Despite facing repeated repression, Umar never compromised on his ideals or hesitated to voice independent opinions, he added.
Tarique Rahman prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and extended his condolences to Umar’s family, followers, and admirers.
