Tareq Md Ariful Islam has been appointed as Bangladesh’s next ambassador to the United States, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Islam, a career diplomat, currently serves as Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva.
The ambassadorial post in Washington became vacant after his predecessor, Asad Alam Siam, returned to Dhaka to take charge as foreign secretary.
A member of the 17th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Affairs), Islam previously served as Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka.
During his diplomatic career, he also held assignments at Bangladesh’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, the Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, where he was Director General of the South Asia Wing.
With this latest posting, Islam is set to assume one of Bangladesh’s most significant diplomatic roles at a time of evolving ties with Washington.
