Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that officials of the republic must not serve as subordinates to any political party.
He made the remarks on Sunday (August 17), while addressing an orientation and training programme at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Dhaka.
The event was organised for newly appointed first and second secretaries to the passport and visa wings of Bangladesh missions abroad.
Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Ghani attended the programme as special guest.
Calling on officials to uphold professionalism, dedication and integrity, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that the standards of the civil service must be maintained.
He warned that officials must not be involved in corruption or act as followers of any political party.
He also urged passport and visa officers posted to foreign missions to serve with a sense of responsibility and service orientation.
“Expatriates are the driving force of Bangladesh’s economy. They sustain the country’s economic foundation through remittances, and a significant portion of them belong to the labour class,” the adviser said.
He emphasised that officials must treat expatriates with respect and maintain good relations with them while providing passports and other services. At the same time, they must also work harmoniously with colleagues in embassies and missions to ensure a constructive working environment.
The home affairs adviser further cautioned passport and visa officials against any action that could undermine the dignity and reputation of the country.
