Bangladesh to remove presidential portraits from foreign missions Mohammed Shahabuddin

Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has instructed all of the country’s foreign diplomatic missions—including embassies, high commissions, consulates, and the official residences and offices of diplomats—to remove photographs of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

The directive, which comes nearly a year after the formation of the interim government, was issued via individual phone calls to each mission on Saturday (August 16), according to official sources in Dhaka.

Until now, portraits of President Shahabuddin had been displayed prominently in all Bangladeshi diplomatic establishments abroad, including in the personal residences of envoys. The foreign ministry has now ordered the immediate removal of these images.

To oversee the implementation of this directive, a regional ambassador has been appointed for each geographic zone. These designated ambassadors will ensure that the presidential portraits are withdrawn from all respective missions.

With this move, Bangladeshi diplomatic missions will no longer display the image of any head of state or government, marking a significant shift in protocol regarding symbolic representations of national leadership abroad.
