Ex-IGP Mamun admits role in July massacre, to testify

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun has admitted to his involvement in crimes against humanity during last year’s July uprising, widely known as the July massacre.

Appearing before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Thursday, Mamun told the court he wished to testify as a prosecution witness voluntarily. At the time of the incident, Mamun was serving as police chief.

Earlier in the day, the tribunal framed charges against three accused, including deposed former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, rejecting their discharge pleas and ordering the trial to proceed.

This marks the formal start of trial proceedings against Hasina and two others in the July massacre case.
