Today (July 11) marks the 90th birth anniversary of renowned poet Al Mahmud, celebrated for his poems on love, nature, and devotion. Born in 1936 in Maurail, Brahmanbaria, he passed away in Dhaka on February 15, 2019.
Fans and admirers will honour the day with various programmes. A discussion and recitation event will be held at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka at 4pm, organised by Kaler Kalas and Kaler Dhwani, with noted literary figures in attendance.
Mymensingh Sahitya Sangsad will also host a seminar titled Our Al Mahmud in Mymensingh. Bangla Academy plans a special seminar in July, while another event featuring poetry and memories will be held at Dhaka University’s MBA building on July 12.
Fans have urged the government to officially celebrate Al Mahmud’s birth anniversary nationwide, recalling how his poems inspired students and the public during the July Revolution.
