ATM Shamsul Huda, former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Bangladesh, passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka on Saturday (July 5). He was 83.
Huda joined the Pakistan Civil Service in 1966 and continued his career in the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) after the country's independence in 1971.
During his distinguished career, he held key positions in the government, including Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Bagerhat, Secretary to the Ministry of Water Resources and Finance, and Managing Director of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Bank. He retired from government service in 2000.
In 2007, Huda was appointed Chief Election Commissioner during a politically sensitive time.
Under his leadership, the 2008 general elections were held, which were widely praised as free, fair, and credible by both domestic and international observers.
