Members of law enforcement agencies in a joint drive arrested five people including a top-listed criminal Monirul Islam alias Monir Dakat from Magura, in Narail.

They were detained from the Narail Sadar Hospital area on Monday afternoon, according to police.

Monir, 48, son of Nurul Islam Master from Beroil Polita village in Magura Sadar, is accused in at least 18 cases, including for murder, robbery, extortion and arms-related crimes. 

He was last arrested in April 2021 but resumed criminal activities after securing bail.

The other arrestees are Ripon Mahmud, 36, son of Khairul Islam; Shaharia Islam Joy, 19, son of Kibriyaz Mollah; Billal Hossain, 48, son of Abdur Rashid; and Takubbar Mollah, 40, son of Nurul Mollah.

A source involved in the operation said Monir and his group entered Narail from Magura on Monday morning. Acting on secret information, army personnel monitored their movement and launched a raid in the hospital area around noon.

A seven-gear knife was recovered from Monir’s possession during the arrest.

Narail Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Sajedul Islam said the army handed over the five detainees in the afternoon, and legal action is being taken against them.
