Corridor to Rakhine claim totally false: Chief Adviser

Chief Adviser (CA) Dr Muhammad Yunus has strongly denied rumours that Bangladesh allowed a corridor to Myanmar’s Rakhine State, calling the claim “completely false and baseless.”

He made the remarks in his Eid-ul-Azha address to the nation on Friday (June 6).

CA said both formal and informal contacts are ongoing with the Myanmar government and rebel groups to maintain border security.

“There is no corridor. It’s like the rumour of a crow stealing someone’s ear—completely made-up. These are attempts to mislead people and create unrest,” he said.

Dr Yunus also highlighting international efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis said he had proposed an international conference at the UN General Assembly last September, and all member states have agreed. The event will be held in New York this September.

He added that global support for repatriation has grown. During a visit in March, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said repatriation to Myanmar is the only solution. In April, Myanmar for the first time announced that 180,000 Rohingyas are eligible to return, during talks at the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok.

The Chief Adviser said a UN proposal for a humanitarian aid channel remains just a suggestion, with no steps taken yet.

He assured the nation that the government is working with international partners to solve the crisis and urged people not to fall for false propaganda.
