The European Union (EU) has responded to Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus’s announcement of a timeline for Bangladesh’s next general election, scheduled for the first half of April 2026.

EU Delegation in Bangladesh in a statement issued on Friday (June 6) said “The Chief Adviser has announced a timeline leading to elections.”

It said, “The EU has consistently supported Bangladesh's political transition, calling for it to be underpinned by the rule of law, fundamental rights and lead to democratic elections. This is a pivotal moment.”

The statement further said, “The EU Delegation calls on all stakeholders to engage constructively in this process, and to take forward work to define an ambitious reform agenda that will lead to a more stable, more prosperous and democratic Bangladesh.”

Earlier in the evening, Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, in a televised address to the nation, declared that the next general election would be held on any day in the first half of April 2026.
